as well as planting mint are basil out side apparently fly's are repelled to the way they smell. Here is a way to keep fly's from your picnic area put Lavender oil on a small sponge in a small can like those cough drop cans let it sit for 24 hours before using and then take it a place on the table and it will keep the fly's away
